Without it, every agent needs its own API key before it can answer, and the model picker offers nothing by default.

Variables

The checklist reports default_llm as configured only when both the model id and the key are set — a key alone points at nothing.

What users see

The counter under the sidebar shows the tokens spent this month on the shared model. The open-source build counts; it does not cap. A monthly ceiling per user or per plan comes from a commercial brick — without it, no bar and no percentage, because a gauge without a limit would suggest a quota that does not exist.

Check

default_llm_available: true and a default_llm_model_id mean agents can run with no key of their own. This endpoint is public and deliberately says nothing about the key itself.
